The self-proclaimed “King of R&B”, Jacques’ sophomore album under the same name demonstrates his dedication to the craft and appreciation of traditional R&B. The Atlanta native’s album is clearly influenced by R&B greats like that of Donell Jones and Tank which is rare to see in modern R&B; however, Jacques showed through this album that this traditional approach to R&B can still be popular as King of R&B hit No. 4 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums list and No. 2 on the 200 charts.
Chris Brown is a hitmaking machine and his album Indigo shows that he still has it as evidenced by his No. 1 hit record “No Guidance” featuring Drake.
With a whopping 32 songs, Indigo has a song for every type of listener. “Lurkin” featuring Tory Lanez is an autotune filled dance record, “Don’t Check On Me” with Justin Bieber is an acoustic masterpiece, and “Need A Stack” with Lil Wayne and Joyner Lucas is a nod to New Orleans bounce genre.
With Chris Brown’s wide experimentation on this album, Indigo was able to read No. 1 on Billboard’s 200 and has already reached Platinum status.
A truly diverse and candid album, Chasing Summer is Top Dawg Entertainment artist SiR’s third album release. Featuring some of the world most famous artists, such as Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and R&B queen Jill Scott, Chasing Summer flew up the billboard charts eventually ending up as the 64th top album.
SiR’s execution on this album was impeccable as he was able to flawlessly compose 14 heartfelt R&B tracks into an album beaming with joy.
Reminiscent of a lot of 90s music, Summer takes an interesting modern take on Over It that flawlessly combines both 90s and modern R&B. Addressing love’s complexities over some incredible production by London On Da Track, Summer Walker’s heartfelt and genuine lyrics shine.
Songs such as “Stretch You Out” and “I’ll Kill You” are real crowd-pleasers from the album, as Summer’s emotional lyrics are able to universally touch every listener. By the end of the 18 song emotional rollercoaster, listeners can’t help, but fall in love with Summer Walker and her intoxicating songs on this album.
Dreamville artist Ari Lennox’s debut release, Shea Butter Baby, similarly to King of R&B, is an authentic take on the genre. Ari’s voice, throughout the album, shines behind a strong neo-soul production from the Dreamville team. Tracks like “Up Late,” “New Apartment” and “BMO,” are illustrations of Ari’s exemplary ability to create spiritually intimate lyrics. In 2019, the project has obtained widespread critical acclaim and has introduced listeners around to the power of R&B when utilized by an extremely talented artist.
